Pennsylvania schools require the attention of all lawmakers!

Classrooms are overcrowded. Schools are underfunded. Local taxpayers are overburdened. And students’ needs are being overlooked.

In the state with the largest gap between the poorest and wealthiest districts, only larger increases of state funding targeted to the districts that need it most will enable an excellent education for every child regardless of zip code. Property taxes are high because the state isn’t paying its share.

Years of underinvestment by the state has left schools $3 billion short in basic education and $1.38 billion short in special education. This is the moment of truth and we need your help to motivate the legislature to fully fund PA schools.

Dear Governor Wolf and Members of the PA Legislature,

Years of underinvestment by the state has left schools $3 billion short in basic education and $1.38 billion short in special education. This is a pivotal moment that could impact the education level of our workforce for generations to come.

In the state with the largest gap between the poorest and wealthiest districts, only a larger increase of state funding targeted to the districts that need it most will enable an excellent education for every child regardless of zip code. Property taxes are high because the state isn’t paying its share.

PA Schools Work believes that this year, the state should be investing half a billion dollars more into our schools through basic education, special education and career and technical education. The governor has proposed just over half of that increase – or $260 million. Given the urgent needs of our schools, that should be the starting point. We urge legislators to support at least that much in this year’s budget, and nothing less.
