Decision Not to Appeal Decision Paves Way for Governor and Legislature to Create an Adequate and Equitable Public School Funding Solution

HARRISBURG — The PA Schools Work Campaign made the following statement regarding the decision of legislative Republicans not to appeal the Commonwealth Court decision in the historic school funding lawsuit:

“The decision by legislative Republicans not to appeal the Commonwealth Court ruling is recognition that the state public school funding system unconstitutionally harms Pennsylvania students.

“It is now time for Governor Shapiro and legislators from both parties to forge a solution that provides every public school with the resources they need to deliver a high-quality education to their students.

“The recently-convened, bipartisan Basic Education Funding Commission is the perfect vehicle to develop a plan to meet the court’s mandate to create a state public school funding system that is both fair and adequate, including quantifiable goals for investment for each school district to ensure all students have access to a public education that prepares them for post-secondary education or gainful employment post-graduation. Curing the constitutional flaws in the current system must begin right away. We look forward to working with the governor and both parties in the legislature to achieve that historic goal.

“Lawmakers should not be distracted by issues like private school vouchers that do not address the court’s ruling and worsen the constitutional school funding crisis by drawing precious funds away from public schools. It’s time to turn the page and begin working towards a remedy following a historic lawsuit victory for Pennsylvania students and families.”
